Content Analysis
The content analysis is a word document which shows my development in analyzing different romance trailers. This particular trailer that I used was 'The Lucky One'. This was a very successful romance film starring Zac Efron. I decided to analyse this as it has many various shots and different editing effects which make it an interesting trailer for me to analyse. This document covers the 90 different shots in the trailer. The columns cover the shot number, the shot type, the length of time the shot plays for, the scene number and a brief description on what is happening in that particular shot.

Dear John Trailer
Below is the official trailer of Dear John. I have added this to my blog so that you can watch the trailer and then I have written a detailed description beneath the trailer. This analyses the camera work, editing, sound and Mise en scene throughout particular scenes in the trailer.

Dear John Trailer
The Dear John trailer contains different conventions of genre in features such as Editing, camera work, mise en scene and sound.
Throughout the trailer, a voice over of the lead female character is used to elaborate on the scenes and the story line that is delivered. The voice over connotes feminism because it is a soft feminine voice. This is conventional to genre as it connotes romance and the non-diegetic voice over reinforces the scenes being displayed.
The non-diegetic music during the whole trailer is a gentle, emotional piece of music that builds up throughout the trailer which mirrors the way the scenes build up in the trailer, creating tension.
This non-diegetic music is conventional to to genre because it connotes feminism and adds emotion to the trailer- bringing tension to particular scenes to make the audience invest in the characters and draw the audience in.

The trailer uses the camera work to represent the genre such as the close up shots of the characters. The close up shots allow the audience to see the characters emotions and their responses to events in the scenes such as the emotions expressed when the female character is crying in the car during the trailer. The close up shots can also represent the intimacy between the characters if a shot reverse shot is used between two characters of the opposite sex. This is used between the two characters in the trailer when the two are talking to each other.
Other camera work such as two shots are used to represent the attraction between the characters and it can also represent the intimacy between the couple.
Two shots are conventional to genre because they connote romance and reinforce the physical attraction and often the tension between the characters,

Editing is used to create romance in the trailer such as an eye line match from the female character when he dives in to retrieve her bag. This immediately signifies the physical attraction between the couple and it allows the audience to know who are the main characters.
Other editing used is match on action which in this trailer represents the item that brings the two characters together. The match on action shows the female dropping her bag and then the bag falling into the ocean. This is symbolic of how they meet one another and this is conventional to genre because it connotes romance and it also allows the audience to see what sparked their romance. This match on action is also conventional to genre because it represents the feminism of the female character through the use of Mise en scene- her handbag- a feminine item.  The male character is proved to be masculine after diving in to retrieve her handbag.

Other editing effects such as an eye line match is used to allow the audience to see what the couple are looking at. In dear John, they use an eye line match to show that the couple are holding their thumbs up to the moon. This scene represents the intimacy of their relationship and it shows how their relationship is blossoming and becoming stronger. The moon is representative of the idea that wherever they are, they can look up at the moon and think of each other. This is conventional to genre because it symbolizes the romance and passion between them.

The final feature used within this trailer that is very conventional to genre is Mise en scene. Firstly, the lighting used in different scenes really strongly symbolizes the romance in this particular trailer.  An example of this is when the couple are outside together looking at the moon. This is very low key lighting and sets a romantic atmosphere which is conventional for genre because it connotes love and romance. Another example of lighting is the first scene when they meet one another on the beach. This is very high key lighting but it is also ambient lighting. The lighting is coming mainly from natural lighting and therefore this connotes happiness which is conventional to genre because it shows that them meeting is going to spark something positive.

Another feature of Mise En Scene is the use of props and costume. These two elements feature throughout the entire trailer and so a strong example of this would be when the male character is standing in front of the mirror in his army uniform. This makes him appear very masculine and contrasts strongly to her light weight clothing such as shorts and her light pastel colors she wears which makes her appear very feminine. The costume is normally designed to contrast the male and female to make them appear stereo typically masculine or feminine especially in a romance film because normally these conventions are not challenged. In Dear John, they use stereo typical characters because this is what appeals to the audience and Mise en scene is a very key feature in keeping the characters conventional for genre.

Story Board
I have created a story board with a drawn up image of the basics of that shot with a short description above it and the scene and shot number. This is to begin planning my basic structure of my trailer after researching into existing romance trailers.

Animatic
I have created an Animatic project on windows live movie maker which shows each shot from the story board in chronological order which allows me to plan my trailer further by seeing what it is going to look like for my target audience.

Ancillary Drafts
Below are my ancillary product drafts which show my first plans for my film magazine and film poster.
